Robert Redford wants a place at the table for artists in decision-making

http://www.reuters.com/article/artsNews/idUSTRE4AC7ZP20081113

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Oscar-winning director Robert Redford is concerned that money for the arts will dry up amid a deepening global financial crisis, and he is pushing for the arts to play a greater role in social change.

"Money is certainly going to dry up for a lot of people on a lot of fronts, especially in the giving area," Redford, 72, told Reuters. "But I believe art can survive, it's like grass growing through a crack in the… Continue

Democracy in Celebration

Just started a site called Democracy in Celebration: http://democracyincelebration.ning.com/. The aim is to create an online record of stories of where people were when they heard Obama was elected President and how they celebrated. Please post a story to the blog section, or a picture or video, that captures where you were/how you felt yesterday/what this currently means...

And please send to others who can post their stories/pics/videos on the site.

I knew an organization called DoSomething but I think they have changed the name. The links library on the T/MC site is interactive. You can add links. So if you know of something like DoSomething and it's not there, just register, log in and submit it. You can even write about it in the articles, or discussion forum.

What a small world - Michele was my director while she was at HU. Hopefully she's finally getting some rest in NYC after her busy summer!

Hi Lina,
Thank you. I read your post on Social Edge and was excited to find this discussion group.

I am part of Humanity United's communications team and saw your comment about DCOH in the Washington Post - do you have the URL for the article? I can't find it.

I found your page by accident, talk about synchronicity ! I have been asking around for a while now about how to get a project launched that I have been working on for most of my life. My friends have all had no answer for me.

At the risk of sounding dramatic, I really do believe that our survival as a species depends on a major paradigm shift among the population. I want to start a series of documentaries [or at lease 1] suitable for someplace like the history Channel. The following is a brief [kind of] synopsis of the general ideas.

I am convinced that at the core of all religious disagreement is a very simple basic component. Communication !! Since the beginning of time man has looked around him and t tried to understand what is going on. Different civilizations at different times have come up with different answers. They have spent the rest of history killing each other by the millions in petty arguments over who is "right" ! They are so blinded by "dogma" that they can't see the simple truth in front of their eyes --- everybody is trying to describe the same thing !!
I'm reminded of the old story about five blind men trying to describe an elephant. One man has hold of an ear, one has hold of a leg, one has the tail, one has the trunk and the other has a tusk ! They all have radically different experiences of the same thing.

I am an ordained minister in the order of spiritual humanism and as I’m sure you know by now believe very strongly in the quality of all human beings with no exceptions and that the biggest detriment to peace on Earth today is intolerance of people with different belIef systems especially in the area of religion. And I believe that the survival of our species literally depends on our ability to sort this all out !!

Following are links to a couple of videos that I made that focus on the general principles of the project:

Thank you in advance for any advice that you can give me.
